What is Marble?
Marble is a hard crystalline metamorphic form of limestone, typically white with coloured mottlings or streaks, which may be polished and is used in different objects and architecture.
Pure white marble is the result of metamorphism of very pure limestones. The characteristic swirls and veins of many colored marble varieties are usually due to various mineral impurities such as clay, silt, sand, iron oxides, or chert which were originally present as grains or layers in the limestone. Green coloration is often due to serpentine resulting from originally high magnesium limestone or dolostone with silica impurities. These various impurities have been mobilized and recrystallized by the intense pressure and heat of the metamorphism.
As the favorite medium for Greek and Roman sculptors and architects, marble has become a cultural symbol of tradition and refined taste. Its extremely varied and colorful patterns make it a favorite decorative material, and are often imitated by different other materials. It represented refinement, class, and wealth. It was also extremely durable. When used for building foundations, it often outlasted generations of people.
- Naturally beautiful
- Durability in time
- Stain resistant when properly maintained
- Individual personality
Created from primarily limestone, marble comes in a wide variety of patterns and colors. The vast array of brilliant hues is determined by the region from which the marble is harvested. Some historically important kinds of marble, named after the locations of their quarries, include: Carrara (Italy), Pentelicus (Greece), Proconnesus (Turkey).
Regardless of where it comes from, there is no denying the visual impact of marble countertops. The slightly porous surface that contains crystals allows light to penetrate the top layer of the marble. This light is then reflected back up to the surface, resulting in a sparkly show that attracts the eye, creating a dazzling effect.
